How can you feel better in the most frigid season of them all?
With the record-breaking temperatures over the weekend and the promise of an early spring, it’s hard to accept the wintery temperatures any longer. Don’t let the bizarre Michigan weather get you down, though. Fight the wintertime blues with these tips:
1. Get more light
Winter is a time for staying inside and snuggling under the blankets trying to keep warm. The sun rises late and sets early, and you usually don’t get the chance to take it in when you’re at work. This lack of sunlight can put a damper on your mood, making you feel sluggish and even depressed. To combat it, do your best to sit by a window when you can and be sure to open blinds and curtains during the day to let in more light. You may also consider purchasing an artificial sunlight lamp.
2. Exercise
Exercise seems to be the answer to most everything, including the symptoms of the wintertime blues. A study published in 2005 found that walking fast for roughly 35 minutes a day five times a week or 60 minutes a day three times a week had a significant influence on mild to moderate depression symptoms, symptoms that are often found in many people throughout the winter months. Treat yourself to a regular exercise routine to see the best results.
